Baseball Splits In Friday Afternoon Doubleheader

LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell Baseball team split their doubleheader against Bemidji State on Friday. After dropping the first game 20-3 they held on in the nightcap for a 14-10 win. The Cardinals are 4-4 on the year.
 
 
Game 1 (Jewell 3, Bemidji State 20)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Down by four runs in the third Luke Bies singled to left scoring Koen Gakstatter.
  • The Beavers scored 16 runs until the bottom of the seventh when Jewell plated two runs for the 20-3 final.

KEY STATS
  • Taylor Brenneman went five innings, striking out three.
  • Bies went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs.
 
Game 2 (Jewell 14, Bemidji State 10)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mason Jeffers got the Cardinals on the board in game two with an RBI single to center scoring Luke Burns in the second inning. One frame later Burns hit Bronson Ryan home while a run-run single popped off of Mike Wunderlich's bat to give Jewell the 4-0 lead before heading to the fourth inning up five runs.
  • Isaac Lager singled in the fourth to score Jack Homoly after three Beaver runs in the top half of the inning. Jewell scored two more runs when Lager and Maddox Meier made their way home.
  • After Bemidji knotted the game up at 10 runs each in the eighth, Wunderlich scored with the bases loaded on a Beavers' wild pitch to take the 11-10 lead. Jewell tacked on three more insurance runs for the 14-10 final.

KEY STATS
  • Alex Smith got the start, tossing 4.2 innings and striking out five. Ryan Hunt earned his second save of the season when he closed out the final two innings punching out two.
  • Jewell tallied 10 hits, with Wunderlich, Jeffers, and Lager all having two-hit days.

UP NEXT
Cardinals have a quick turnaround with another doubleheaders against the Beavers on Saturday.
