BOLIVAR, Mo. - After scoring just 27 points in the first half, the William Jewell men's basketball team dropped 17 in the overtime period on Saturday to defeat Southwest Baptist 77-66 for their tenth Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season. The Cardinals improve to 14-8 overall and 10-4 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tied at 11-all after a quick opening five minutes both teams went cold, combining for just 20 points over the next 10-plus minutes. Free throws by Bradley Lightbourne combined with an Ashton Jermain three pointer gave Jewell a two point lead but the Bearcats scored just before the half to lead 29-27.
- After the Cardinals retook the lead on a Kanukayi Gudza three, Southwest Baptist went on a 15-4 run to open up a nine point advantage. With just over three minutes to go in regulation, Jewell got baskets from Lightbourne and Will Beck to pull within two before Justice Sutton hit a pull up triple to give the Cards the lead with 51 seconds remaining. SBU's Jevin Sullivan hit a three of his own with under 10 ticks on the clock to force the overtime period.
- Jewell held the Bearcats scoreless for the first 4:16 of overtime and forced five turnovers as the Cardinals built a 12- point lead. SBU finally broke the ice but Jewell was 6-for-7 on free throws in the final minute.
