Cardinals Split with Minnesota Duluth

BRANSON, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team rallied for a 3-2 win over Minnesota Duluth on Wednesday afternoon after dropping game one 12-4. The Cardinals move to 9-13 on the season in their final tune-up prior to the start of Great Lakes Valley Conference play. 

Game 1: Minnesota Duluth 12, Jewell 4
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bulldogs jumped out in front with three runs in the opening inning but Jewell got one back in the following frame on an RBI double from Avery Webster
  • Minnesota Duluth broke the game open in the third, scoring six runs on five hits. 
  • The Cardinals scored three on four hits in the top of the fifth as Lexi Lopez doubled to score Webster before Amanda Chung's single plated two more.
  • In the fifth, the Bulldogs added three runs on three hits to end the game early, 12-4.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell finished with eight hits, led by two each from Webster and Mikayla Chairez
  • Reagan Bennett (2-6) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on two hits and four walks. 

Game 2: Jewell 3, Minnesota Duluth 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Much like the opener, the Bulldogs took the early lead, scoring two runs in the second on a home run and RBI single. 
  • A passed ball allowed Emma Jane Ogle to score after a triple in the second inning to cut the deficit in half before A sac fly by Chung tied things up in the following frame. 
  • The teams went scoreless over the next three-plus innings until Lopez walked and advanced to third on an error by the Bulldog shortstop before scoring on a Chung base hit. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell had four hits in the win, one each by Webster, Ogle, Chung and Alexa Almejo, with triples by the former two. 
  • Olivia Wood (2-2) earned the complete game win with two earned runs on just four hits. 

UP NEXT
Jewell returns home to open GLVC play on Saturday, hosting Maryville University at 2 p.m.
