Cardinals Take Game One at Lewis, 10-5

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The William Jewell baseball team opened a four-game series with Lewis University on Friday afternoon, winning 10-5 to snap a 10 game skid. The Cardinals improve to 4-15 on the season and 1-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell jumped in front with two runs in the first two innings, scoring on a wild pitch, before Austin Dahlberg led off the second frame with a solo home run to center.
  • After the Flyers knotted things at two, the Cardinals retook the lead in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded Luke Bies singled to score Maddox Meier followed by an error allowing another run to cross. Justin George sent a sac fly to right field to make it 5-2 in favor of the Cardinals.
  • Leading by two in the top of the sixth, Hayden Post scored on another base hit from Bies before the latter crossed on a ground out to expand the advantage to 7-3.
  • With the Cardinals in front, 8-4 heading to the final inning, Meier doubled to score Dahlberg before scoring himself for added insurance. Lewis plated one in the bottom half but back-to-back strikeouts from Ryan Hunt shut the door.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell finished eight hits, led by three from Bies, who also had three RBI.
  • Taylor Brenneman (1-1) earned the win, working seven innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits.
  • Hunt tossed the final two innings, picking up five strikeouts.
