Cardinals Split with Augustana in Non-Conference Action

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team saw their five game winning streak snapped on Friday with an 8-5 loss but bounced back to take game two, 4-2 over Augustana University. The Cardinals move to 8-10 on the season with the split. 

Game One: Augustana 8, Jewell 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one frame in the opener as Mikayla Chairez doubled down the line and advanced to third before scoring on a wild pitch. A passed ball allowed Lexi Lopez to score while Amanda Chung crossed the plate on a double from Alexa Almejo
  • The Vikings responded with two in the top half of the second inning, scoring on an error and a fielder's choice. 
  • Chairez homered to left field to expand the lead to two but Augustana took the lead in the following frame with three runs on three hits. 
  • The Vikings outscored Jewell 4-1 over the final four innings to take the 8-5 win. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Chairez and Chung each finished with a game high three hits with the former scoring three times. 
  • Avrey Reynolds (3-2) took the loss, working 3.1 frames, allowing five earned runs on five hits and five walks. 

Game Two: Jewell 4, Augustana 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In game two, it was the visitors who grabbed the first lead, plating two runs in the top of the first. 
  • Jewell got on the board in the fifth as a two-run error tied the game before Chung's two-run double in the fifth put the Cardinals on top for good.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell managed just four hits in the win, with two by Chung. 
  • Katie Heckman (2-1) earned the complete game win, allowing just two earned runs on five hits.

UP NEXT
Jewell returns to the field quickly as they host Northwest Missouri State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
