KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - On a Saturday afternoon that saw multiple weather delays, the William Jewell softball team split with Truman State, falling 13-7 in game one before responding with an 8-1 victory in game two. The Cardinals move to 16-22 on the season and 7-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Game 1: Truman 13, Jewell 7
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals wasted no time jumping out to the early lead as Mikayla Chairez walked and eventually scored on a sac fly off the bat of Amanda Chung.
- After the Bulldogs quickly tied things up Sheyenne Kelch's home run in the second frame put Jewell back in front briefly before Truman plated three runs in the bottom half to take their first lead.
- After a rain delay, Kelch again came through with the long ball, this time a grand slam to put the Cards back on top. The home team rallied again, exploding for six runs to retake the lead, 10-6.
- In the fifth, Emma Jane Ogle single through the left side and came around to score on a base knock from Chairez to get back within three but the Cardinals could get no closer.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell roped nine hits, led by two from Kelch, who finished with five RBI.
- Reagan Bennett (6-9) took the loss in the circle with six earned runs on six hits and five walks.
Game 2: Jewell 8, Truman 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After three scoreless frames, the Cardinals plated the first runs of game two on a two-RBI double from Almejo who then scored on a sac fly by Avery Webster. Chairez's solo home run to right field made it 4-0 midway through.
- Jewell added two more in the fifth as Bennett walked and scored on a Kelch base hit before an Almejo sac fly allowed Tori Woodard to cross and make it 6-0.
- Back-to-back doubles in the sixth got Truman on the board but Almejo added more for the Cardinals in the seventh with a two-RBI single.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals out hit Truman 9-5, led by three from Woodard while Ogle and Almejo each had two, with latter also driving in five.
- Olivia Wood (4-4) earned the complete game win, allowing a single earned run on five hits while striking out a season high nine batters with no walks.

The Cardinals continue their April road swing next Saturday as they travel to crosstown rival Rockhurst for a doubleheader.
