LIBERTY, Mo. - On Pink Day, the William Jewell softball team won a pair of one-run contests over Drury University in comeback fashion. The Cardinals took the opener, 3-2 followed by a 2-1 win in the nightcap to defeat the Panthers for the first time since 2018 and improve to 19-25 overall and 10-12 in conference play.
Game 1: Jewell 3, Drury 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Drury jumped out to an early lead as Emma Niemczyk, the game's first batter, put a home run off the scoreboard in left field to put the Panthers in front.
- The bats on both sides were quiet for the next four frames until Jewell scored twice in the fifth. An error and base hit put two in scoring position for Alexa Almejo who roped a double down the left field line to give Jewell their first lead. The senior Almejo then added a critical insurance run on a passed ball.
- The Panthers made things interesting late scoring a run on a double to left but Katie Heckman came on to record the final two outs and strand the tying the run on third base.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals were out hit in the opener, 6-3, with singles by Sheyenne Kelch and Mikayla Chairez to go with Almejo's double.
- After allowing the early home run Reagan Bennett settled and worked 6.1 frames, allowing just two earned runs.
- Heckman picked up her second save of the season.
Game 2: Jewell 2, Drury 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Just like they did in the first game, Drury got on the board first with a solo home run, this time by Isabel Ervin.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Bennett dropped a single into right field and was pinch ran for by Elena Tracy. After another base hit and a sac bunt, two were in scoring position for Almejo who came through with the timely hit, a double to left center that put the Cardinals in front for good.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell posted seven hits, led by Almejo's two.
- Olivia Wood earned the win, working four innings and allowing a single earned run.
- Heckman grabbed her second save of the day, and third of the season, working a scoreless seventh inning, stranding the tying run on third base.
UP NEXT
Jewell returns to action on Sunday to take on Missouri S&T at 12 p.m. The Cardinals will honor six seniors between games.
