Jewell Splits with UMSL to Close 2026 Season

ST. LOUIS - The William Jewell softball team posted a dominant 11-3 win in five innings on Sunday afternoon to earn a split with Missouri-St. Louis. The Cardinals dropped the opener, 4-2. Jewell closes the season at 21-29 overall and 12-16 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, finishing ninth in the league, their highest mark since 2018.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mikayla Chairez wasted no time blasting a solo home run to straight away center and give Jewell the lead after one batter. Lexi Lopez followed with a base hit and scored on a bases load walk to Emma Jane Ogle
  • UMSL got one run back in the bottom half of the first, before rallying for three runs on three hits and two Jewell miscues to take a 4-2 lead that stood the rest of the way.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell out hit the Tritons, 7-5, led by three from Chairez, while Chung had two. 
  • Reagan Bennett (7-13) suffered the loss with five innings of work, allowing two earned runs, while Katie Heckman added a shutout frame. 

Game 2: Jewell 11, UMSL 3 (5 Inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals broke things open early in game two, plating six runs in the top of the second inning. With Jewell leading 3-0 after a hit-by-pitch, RBI single, and sac fly, Lexi Lopez sent a three-run home run to center field to make it 6-0 in favor of the Cardinals. 
  • UMSL plated their first run in the bottom half of the second but Jewell came back with two more in the third as Sheyenne Kelch made it 8-1 with a two-run home run to center. 
  • In the fifth, the Cardinals got two RBI doubles from Kelch and Chairez sandwiched around a base hit by Avrey Reynolds that scored a run to expand the advantage to 11-1. 
  • The Tritons got two runs in bottom of the frame but a strikeout by Heckman ended the game in short innings. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell roped out 11 hits, led by three from Woodard, while scoring three times. Meanwhile Kelch, Webster, and Chairez all finished with two hits with the former driving in four runs and scoring three.
  •  Olivia Wood (7-5) earned the win in the circle, allowing a single earned run on four hits.
