Cards Fall 35-10 at Sioux Falls

William Jewell College fell to the University of Sioux Falls Saturday 35-10 at Bob Young Field in Sioux Falls.

The Cardinals, 1-4, fell behind quickly 21-0 before capitalizing on two Cougar turnovers in the second quarter to cut the halftime deficit to 21-10. Freshman Glen Whitney scored a four yard touchdown in the second quarter following a muffed punt by USF (2-3), and sophomore Warren Frevert hit a 42 yard field goal in the quarter.

Frevert, who is 17-17 on field goal attempts in his career at Jewell, came after sophomore Jason Carmichael intercepted a pass while blitzing the quarterback and snagging the ball as he was leaping to knock the pass down.

The Cardinals shut down USF's offense for most of the third quarter but couldn't put any points on the board, either. The Cougars finally scored touchdowns late in the third and fourth quarters to put the game out of reach.

Like William Jewell, the University of Sioux Falls (who have reached the championship game in the NAIA playoffs the last five consecutive years and won two of those games) is also in their first year of NCAA Division II membership.

The Cardinals return home to face Southwest Baptist next Saturday in the annual homecoming game. Kickoff will be at 1:00 at Greene Stadium.
