DURANGO, Colo. - In their second trip in the last two years to the southwestern corner of Colorado, the William Jewell football team defeated Fort Lewis College 34-14 on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals start the season 1-0 for the third consecutive year for the first time since the 1988-1990 seasons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After both teams had an early and three-and-out to start the game, Jewell forced the first turnover as the Fort Lewis quarterback ran up the middle to meet
Kyler Craigg who forced a fumble to set the Cardinals up on the FLC 43 yard line.
Bleu Renfrow gave Jewell the early lead, converting a 24-yard field goal moments later.
On the ensuing drive, the Skyhawks' Stone Walker again fumbled, this time forced by
Justin Endicott and recovered by
Sonny Proctor to give the Cardinal offense another strong starting point.
Jake Shaffer connected twice with
Yasir Winston with the second resulting in a 26-yard touchdown to push the lead to 10-0.
Fort Lewis settled and got on the board early in the second quarter with a one yard touchdown run but Jewell got the points back, starting the drive with
Devin Walton forcing the third Skyhawk fumble in the opening half. With just over three minutes remaining in the period, Shaffer completed a 22-yard pass to
Nate Barnett for the touchdown to gave the Cardinals a 17-7 lead at the break.
Shaffer and Barnett started the second half, the way they finished the first, connecting for a Cardinal touchdown, this time for five yards to push the advantage to 21. The Skyhawks scored on their ensuing drive before the teams traded interceptions and both offenses stalled late in the period.
Derrick Von Hubbard forced another FLC fumble to start the fourth quarter and set up a 52-yard field goal from Renfrow, which ties Jewell's NCAA era record, and push the lead to 27-14. The Cardinals added a late one yard touchdown run by
MicahJo Barnett to put the game on ice.
