The William Jewell College women's basketball team got by William Penn University 65-53 tonight in the Winstead-Reeves Classic in Maryville, Mo., to open the season at a perfect 3-0.
The game went back and forth in the first half and saw the lead change hands a total of 8 times. Jewell shot 50% from the field in the first half and the Lady Statesmen shot 46%.
The second half saw both teams cool down tremendously from the field as the Cardinals only connected on 31% of their shots but also held William Penn to 34%. The Cardinals were however, a perfect 14-14 from the free throw line in the second half which helped propel Jewell to the win.
Sophomore
Cassy Nicolay led all scorers with 18 points and also pulled down a game high 13 rebounds. First-year player
Aerial Smith finished in double figures with 13 points and a game high five steals.
The Cardinals, 3-0 on the year, will host Central Christian College on Tuesday, November 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the Mabee Center on the Jewell Campus in Liberty, Mo.
