Cardinals Fall to #15 Pitt State 49-7

Box Score

The William Jewell College football team got a taste of big-time NCAA athletics Saturday at Smith Field in Pittsburg Kansas on Saturday, falling to 1-3 with a 49-7 loss to the Gorillas in front of over 9,000 fans.

The Cardinals made things interesting, though, with a strong first half performance on offense, moving the ball well in opening drives but having difficulty penetrating deep into Pitt State territory. The Cardinals lone score, set up by a scramble by sophomore quarterback Sean Shelton, came with 10:47 left in the fourth quarter when Shelton dove into the endzone from the one-yardline.

The Gorillas didn't have as much trouble scoring, punting only once in the game (with under a minute to play in the fourth quarter). Two Pitt State drives came to a close on interceptions by freshman Caleb Sims and by senior Owen Hodges. Pitt State had scoring runs of 29, 37, 14, 4 and 1 yards and scoring passes of 53 yards and 14 yards.

The Cardinals trailed 21-0 at halftime, only to see Pitt State score three touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game away.

The Cardinals fall to 1-3, and travel to the University of Sioux Falls Saturday, October 1.
