NCAA Division II #7 rated University of Southern Indiana defeated William Jewell Thursday night 80-71 in Liberty, Mo.
Jewell (4-7, 1-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play) was led by
Mark Mason who finished with 30 points while
Nick Larson posted another double double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
The Cardinals started the game strong jumping out to a 28-19 lead. USI (12-1, 4-1 GLVC) fought back and actually led 30-29 at the half.
The Cardinals reclaimed the lead with the opening basket of the second half only to see USI sophomore forward Taylor Wischmeier score 10 points on five straight buckets in a 14-0 Eagles' run that resulted in a 43-32 lead with 15:23 to play. Jewell was able to cut the lead to five points, 43-38, before USI was able to rebuild the margin to 16 points, 67-51, with 3:18 remaining. The Eagles put the game away with solid free throw shooting down the stretch.
The Cardinals return to the Mabee Center to face Kentucky Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff at the Mabee Center is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
