Cardinals Fade in 2nd Half Against McKendree

Box Score After leading 7-6 at halftime and 14-6 early in the second half of Saturday's football game, William Jewell College was outscored by McKendree University 29-6 over the final 28 minutes of play in Lebanon, Illinois on Saturday afternoon, losing to the Bearcats 35-20.

The Cardinals fall to 2-4 (1-2 in the GLVC).

Jewell started on the right foot, jumping to a 7-0 lead on Sean Shelton's touchdown pass to Andrew Buffa from the five yard line with 3:32 left in the first quarter.  After two McKendree fieldgoals in the second quarter, Jewell's Jeff Cunningham made a diving interception on the first play from scrimmage in the second half and the Cardinals promptly moved 54 yards on six plays, ending with Jon Molzen's touchdown reception with 12:42 left in the third quarter.

It was mostly McKendree after that.

The Bearcats scored four unanswered touchdowns and a two-point conversion, the last touchdown coming with 1:42 left in the game to put it away, as McKendree celebrated their 17th straight homecoming win.

Chris Smith scored on a 2 yard pass with just five seconds left to end the scoring.

Shelton had three touchdown passes and was picked off two times.  Molzen had another 100+yard receiving game, with 12 catches and 110 yards, and Jimmy DeStaphano had 16 total tackles.

The Cardinals return to the road next week, travelling to Rolla, Missouri to face Missouri Science & Technology.
