The William Jewell College women's tennis team got singles wins from
Paula Peters,
Carli Bisesi,
Kristen Stivers,
Katy Lehenbauer and
Loree Hazelrigg to hold off University of Missouri-St. Louis, 6-3, Friday at Clayview Country Club.
Peters and Lehenbauer got Jewell off to a strong start at No. 1 doubles, rolling past Louisa Werner and Pujitha Bandi, 8-2.
The Lady Tritons tied the match up at 1-1 with as Danielle Henkel and Leanne Cantalupo defeated
Kristen Stivers and
Hana Lindbloom 8-5. UMSL's duo of Katie Rynkiewich and Leticia Garcia then bested the Jewell No.2 team of Conner and
Loree Hazelrigg in a thrilling 9-8 (7-5) match which gave the Lady Tritons a 2-1 advantage after doubles play.
From there, Jewell (8-5, 1-2 GLVC) relied on wins from the top and bottom of its singles lineup to secure the dual.
Junior
Carli Bisesi was first to finish, moving to 7-6 on the spring with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Henkel at No. 2 singles.
Bandi got the hosts on the board next, taking care of
Hana Lindbloom at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-0.
But the Cardinals were able to end the drama soon after, as
Paula Peters,
Kristen Stivers and
Katy Lehenbauer finished off wins to clinch the match and give Jewell its first ever GLVC western division dual match victory. Peters won in three sets over Werner 6-4, 1-6 and 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Stivers outlasted Cantalupo 6-3, 7-6 at No. 3 singles and Lehenbauer bested Rynkiewich 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles to give Jewell the deciding fifth match.
Loree Hazelrigg continued her solid play of late, with a three set 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 victory over Garcia at No. 6 singles.
Jewell will continue GLVC play on Saturday as they host Maryville University at 10:00 a.m. at Clayview Country Club.
