Orediggers Down Cardinals in Offensive Showcase

Box Score Box Score

William Jewell College football travelled to Golden, Colorado to open their season against Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, dropping a 57-16 contest that featured over 1200 yards in total offense.

The difference: Mines scored on all six of their trips into the red zone, while the Cardinals were 2-5 on scoring chances inside the Orediggers 20 yard line.

Jewell was down 13-0 after Mines scored on their first two offensive possessions, one of which was set up on a Jewell turnover giving possession to CSM on the Cardinal 40 yard line.  Jewell's offense, though, came to life on their second series, as Scott Buffa scored on a 50 yard pass from Sean Shelton, who rolled away from pressure and threw off the wrong foot to connect with Buffa down the right sideline.

The euphoria was short lived, however, as the Miners outscored the Cardinals 24-3 over the next two quarters, taking a 37-10 lead late in the third quarter before the Cardinals were able to score another touchdown; even then, the Cardinals struggled to score, as a Phil Ancar fumble from the Mines three yard line rolled into the end zone and was covered by Chris Smith.

Neither the Cardinals nor CSM struggled to move the ball, as Mines had 690 yards of total offense (445 yards  passing, 245 yards rushing) and Jewell had 474 yards in offense (280 yards, 194 yards  rushing).   Shelton was 21-32 passing for 261 yards and a touchdown and an interception; Glenden Whitney had 112 yards rushing on eight carries.  Jon Molzen had 88 yards in receptions, while Buffa's long touchdown reception was a big part of his 4 reception, 86 yard day.

Brock Sheldon and Thomas Swoboda each had six tackles for the Cardinals, and Swoboda had one tackle for a loss.

The Cardinals will travel to St. Joseph, Missouri next Saturday night to face Missouri Western University in a non-conference tilt beginning at 6:00.
