Volleyball Splits Saturday Matches in St. Louis

Cardinal volleyball finished their three-match road trip to St. Louis on Saturday, splitting a pair of matches against Pttsburg State and against Maryville University.

In the first match for Jewell on Saturday, Pittsburg State won 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 14-25, 25-18) in non-conference play.  Jewell actually outhit the Gorillas in the match .154 to .141, and had 16 blocks to eight for Pitt State.  The Cardinals, though, had seven more service errors than PSU, and the Gorillas had 85 digs defensively to Jewell's 75.

Kaylee Marquardt hit .368 in the match and had 18 kills, leading both teams; she also had 18 digs.

Christina Pratt had 12 kills and 17 digs, Katie Damgar had 18 digs, and 25 assists were credited to Kelsey Moffitt against Pitt State.

The Cardinals bounced back to defeat Maryville University 3-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play in the second match of the day.

After building a two game advantage, the Cardinals let the Saints back into the match by dropping games three and four, then rallied to win game five 15-8.  The Cardinals outhit Maryville .250 to .077 to wrap up the win in the fifth game.

Marquardt again had a big match, with 15 kills to lead the Cardinals along with 17 digs and three blocks.  Pratt had 12 kills and led both teams with seven blocks, Libby Ording added 13 kills, and Cailynn Hayter had 23 set assists while Moffitt chipped in another 21 assists.

The Cardinals had 96 digs in the match: Damgar led with 23 digs, Marquardt 17, Moffitt 14, and Hayter 12 to lead the way.

The Cardinals (3-19, 2-9 GLVC) travel to Aurora, Illinois next weekend for the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover tournament.
