Cardinal Volleyball Splits First Day of Challenge

William Jewell volleyball split their two matches in the GLVC-GLIAC Crossover Tournament in Aurora, Illinois on Friday, losing in five sets to Lake Superior State University before sweeping Walsh University in the second match of the day.

The win against Walsh (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) was highlighted by nine kills for Libby Ording, Lauren Holm, and Kaylee Marquardt, among the 41 recorded for Jewell.  The Cardinals hit .206 for the match, including .342 in game one.

Cailynn Hayter had 30 assists, Katie Damgar had 14 digs, Marissa Brackman had 13 digs and Kelsey Wagner had 11 digs and seven kills. The Cardinals had only two serve receive errors in the match and six service aces.

In the first match of the day, Lake Superior and Jewell traded wins through five long sets (25-16, 24-26, 25-22, 27-29, 15-11) and more than two hours.  Neither team was particularly impressive offensively, with LSSU hitting .187 in the match and Jewell hitting .120, with the Lakers holding a slim 61-60 edge in total kills.  Lake Superior had 10 ace serves to the Cardinals' five in the match.

Individually,  Ording had 16 kills,  Holm had 14, Marquardt had a dozen and Wagner had 11.  Hayter chipped in 26 assists while Damgar had 22 digs, Wagner had 21, and Brackman had 19.  Jewell also had 19 blocks in the match.

The Cardinals (4-20) continue play in the Crossover Tournament with a match against the University of Findlay tomorrow.
