Cards Drop Tough Road Decision to Fort Hays State

Box Score
Cardinal football travelled to Hays, Kansas to take on Fort Hays State University in non-conference football Saturday night, coming up short despite a solid performance against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Tigers 34-17.

The Cards (1-4) jumped to a 10-7 lead on the Tigers (1-4) early in the second quarter on a Warren Frevert field goal of 46 yards, and held the lead until midway in the stanza.  Two quick Fort Hays scores made it 21-10 at half, however, and another Tiger score made it 28-10 in the middle of the third quarter.

A D.J. Balaz 26 yard run late in the quarter cut the gap to 11, and the Cards and Tigers battled back and forth from there on, with Fort Hays adding a field goal to make the difference 14 at 31-17, and finally wrapping it up with another field goal with 1:19 left.

Hays outrushed Jewell 271 to 136, and outpassed the Cardinals 130 yards to 115.

Balaz led the Cards with 55 rushing yards, while Thomas Cook, Jr. had 51.  Sean Shelton was 10-26 passing for 57 yards, throwing one touchdown to Chris Smith but being intercepted three times.

Defensively, Trey Talley had 10 tackles, and Jimmy DeStefano had nine.

The Cardinals jump back into Great Lakes Valley Conference play next week with a 1:00 p.m. game at home against Truman State.
