Men’s Basketball Falls To Missouri Western in Season Opener, 78-55

The William Jewell College men's basketball team (0-1) lost to Missouri Western State University (3-1) Friday night, falling to the Griffons by a score of 78-55 in the opening game of the season at the 22nd annual Hillyard Tipoff Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. 

First-year player D'Vante Mosby led Jewell with 13 points, adding six rebounds, one assist and a block. Junior Jordan Lewis chipped in with 10 points.

The Cardinals shot 32 percent from the floor in the contest, hitting 25 of their 59 attempts.  Jewell also recorded three-three pointers, going 3-of-18 from beyond the arc.

The Griffons jumped out to an early advantage in the opening half, taking an eleven point lead in the first five minutes of play. Jewell came back to cut it to five before Western went on a 22-4 run to end the half leading 42-19.

The Griffons opened the second half, leading by as many as 20 points at the midway point of the final frame.  Jewell then went on an 8-0 run to cut it to 12 before Western built the lead back to 20 and even stretched it to as many as 27. 

Jewell is right back in action on Saturday, Nov. 16, taking on Northwest Missouri State University in the first game of the Hillyard Classic. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
