Dwight Sistrunk, Jr.'s deperation shot from beyond half court as time expired lifted William Jewell to a 97-94 win over Rockhurst University in the opening game of the Great Lakes Valley Conference season Thursday night at the Mabee Center in Liberty.
After the Hawks had hit a long three-pointer to tie the game, Sistrunk took the inbounds pass and launched the game winner that sent Jewell to 3-3 on the year, and Rockhurst to 3-4.
The shot capped a furious second half between the two teams, who battled after Rockhurst led 40-39 after the first half, and overshadowed a 36 point night for Hawk senior Brandon McCann, who hit nine three-pointers.
Sistrunk led the way with 21 points for Jewell, while
Jordan Lewis and
Cyril Bilong each ended the game with 18 points. Â DeVonte Bell had 16 points, with D'Vante Mosby adding13, and
Clint McCullough chipping in six rebounds. Â Mosby led all rebounders with nine, narrowly missing his third straight double-double.
Jewell will host Central Christian College of the Bible on Saturday afternoon beginning at 3:00 p.m.
