Box Score William Jewell football got down by 20 points in the first half to Great Lakes Valley Conference foe McKendree University before dropping a 29-24 decision to the Bearcats, falling to 1-2 (0-1 GLVC).
The Cardinal offense got untracked with four minutes left in the first half, as Jewell drove for a fourth-down-and-inches quarterback sneak by
Sean Shelton with 4.4 seconds left in the period.
Jewell surprised McKendree with an onside kick to start the second half, with kicker
Warren Frevert recovering the ball at midfield. Â The Cardinals drove for another touchdown,this one on a pass from Shelton to Thomas Cook, Jr., followd by a 35 yard Frevert field goal later in the period to pull within 20-17.
In the fourth quarter, Shelton hit
Nate Egharevba on a 23 yard slant to give Jewell a 24-20 lead with 14:07 to play.
The McKendree running game, which caused problems all night for Jewell, again carried them down the field, with a go-ahead touchdown pass, followed by a late sack of Shelton in the end zone, making the final 29-24 McKendree (2-1, 1-0).
The Cardinals are at home again next week. Â The homecoming football game will begin at 1:00 against South Dakota School of Mines.
