Box Score
William Jewell and South Dakota Mines & Technology combined for over 1100 yards of total offense and 118 points during the Cardinal Homecoming game Saturday, but it was the Hardrockers offense that was just a little too much for Jewell to overcome, winning a marathon affair 70-48.
Neither defense could do much to stop the other team, as Mines overcame a 14 point deficit at one time in the game, and Jewell nearly overcame a 21 point deficit, missing an extra point that would have completed the comeback.Â
Jewell (1-2) led early after an opening drive touchdown, followed by an interception and runback to the 1-yard line by Jack Bissonnett, followed on the next play by a scoring dive from Derrick Strezelecki, who finished with 110 yards rushing.
Mines (4-1) Â then scored the next 21 points before
Sean Shelton scored in the middle of the second quarter on a 1 yard run, only to have the Hardrockers 21 more unanswered points to take a huge lead.
DJ Balazs, in relief of the injured Shelton, then emerged to rally the Cardinals with two touchdown passes and two touchdown runs, the final run pulling Jewell within one point only to have the extra point try blocked.
Mines then scored three more touchdowns in the last 8 minutes to cap the win.
Balazs threw for 139 yards and rushed for 79;
Nate Egharevba had five receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively,
Nick Messer had two interceptions for Jewell.
The Cardinals (1-3) travel to Hays, Kansas next Saturday night for a matchup with the Fort Hays State Tigers at 7:00.
