Cards survive late scare, hang on to beat Lincoln 20-13

Box Score

Lincoln University Head Coach Mike Jones is perhaps best known for the game saving tackle for the St. Louis Rams in the Super Bowl over the Tennesee Titans as he made a tackle at the one yard line as time expired.  Tonight, William Jewell did the same as they narrowly escaped with a 20-13 win over Lincoln University at Greene Stadium.   The win moves the Cards to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.  Lincoln falls to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the GLVC.

The Blue Tigers got things started early when Morris Henderson caught a 10 yard touchdown pass from Owen Jordan to give Lincoln a 6-0 lead as the extra point was no good.

On the ensuing possession Jewell drove all the way to the Lincoln one-yard line and was stopped on fourth and goal to give the ball back to Lincoln.

After a three and out the Cards drove down again to the Red Zone but had to settle for a field goal attempt by Brandon Womack which was blocked by Lincoln and recovered by Lincoln at the 23 yard line.

In the second quarter, the Cardinals were the recipient of a tremendous break in the game.  Quarterback Nick West's pass on third and 16 was deflected into the arms of running back Thomas Cook, Jr., who took it 70 yards for Jewell's first score of the game and with the extra point took a 7-6 lead.

The Blue Tigers answered right back as Darius Cook then took the kickoff 90 yards back for a touchdown to put Lincoln back up 13-6.

Jewell got the ball back with just over a minute left in the half and on third and three West hooked up with Quentin Riser for a 47 yard touchdown to give the Cardinals a 14-13 halftime lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, Womack added field goals of 23 and 24 yards respectively to put Jewell up 20-13.

The Cardinals then stopped Lincoln on fourth down with 1:31 seconds left in the game and appeared to have wrapped up the victory.  However, West fumbled the ball with 29 seconds remaining and Lincoln took over at the William Jewell 48 yard line with no timeouts remaining.

The Blue Tigers drove all the way to the 10 yard line and on the games final play Jordan hit receiver Khiry Draine who was tackled at the William Jewell one yard line with no time left and thus gave Jewell the victory.

Cook, Jr., finished the game with 119 yards rushing on 27 attempts and had six catches for 120 yards and a touchdown for Jewell.  West was 17-29 for 285 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.  Overall the Cardinals produced 458 yards of total offense.

Defensively, Thomas Clanton and Quinlan Riser led Jewell with 7.5 tackles each.

The game also featured a total of 27 penalties.  Lincoln finished with 15 penalties for 146 yards while Jewell was whistled for 12 penalties and 137 yards.

William Jewell will continue GLVC action as they travel to Kirksville, Mo., Saturday, October 11 for a matchup against Truman State.  Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
