Cardinals Upset #23 Indianapolis, Hand 'Hounds First-Ever GLVC Football Loss

William Jewell football notched one of the biggest upset wins in the long history of the program on Saturday in Indianapolis, Ind., defeating the three-time Great Lakes Valley Conference football champion University of Indianapolis Greyhounds 27-24.

The win over the 23rd ranked Greyhounds ends the Cardinal season at 5-6. Jewell, the preseason #9 team in the nine team conference, finishes the GLVC season at 5-3.

The Cardinals took the opening kickoff and set the tempo for the game with a 19-play touchdown drive that ended with D.J. Balazs' 8 yard scoring pass to Quentin Riser, a drive that consumed 9:24 and gave the Cardinals a lead they would carry into halftime at 6-3.

Balazs threw another touchdown pass in the game and ran for a score in a back-and-forth second half.  Jewell finally took the lead for good with 8:41 left in the game and built a 27-17 lead with 2:30 left to play, withstanding a late Indianapolis touchdown drive and recovering an onside kick. The final drive of the game ate up the remaining :47 to seal the win.

Balazs was 28-41 with 239 yards with two touchdowns and no interception, adding 56 yards on the ground. Trey Mask rushed for 86 yards and a score, and Riser and Travae Jones each had touchdown catches, Jones leading the team with 87 yards in receptions.

Quinlan Riser had seven tackles and forced a fumble on special teams, Andrew Pence had five tackles and Marcus Moye had two sacks.

The Greyhounds are still in contention for an NCAA Division II playoff berth, finishing the regular season at 9-2.  They clinched their third consecutive GLVC Football championship last week in a win over Missouri Science and Technology.
