Cards Edged By Southwest Baptist 80-77 in Overtime

The William Jewell College men's basketball team lost an 80-77 overtime non-conference barn-burner to Southwest Baptist University at the Mabee Center on Tuesday night.

Menus Stephens hit a driving lay-up with 14 seconds to play to put the Bearcats up by three and Jewell's Christian Hildenbrandt missed two attempts to tie the game from three point land in the final seconds to seal the win for Southwest Baptist.  The Bearcats improve to 2-3 overall while the Cardinals fall to 0-3.

The Cardinals played catch up for the most of the contest and held their only lead of the game 6-5 with 16:50 to go in the first half.

The first half saw the Cardinals miss a number of opportunities at the free throw line going 16-23 at the line and trailed the Bearcats 40-33 at the half.

Southwest Baptist controlled play for much of the second half and led by 11 with 4:21 to play in the game.  Jewell then went on an 12-1 run and tied the game at 71 when Austin Regier completed a three point play with 1:57 to play.

The Cards got the ball back with 41 seconds left and after working the clock D'Vante Mosby's three point shot was off and the Bearcats grabbed the rebound.

Daymond Cowlah was then fouled by Cyril Bilong with four seconds left and went to the line to shoot two free throws for Southwest Baptist.  Cowlah missed both attempts and Mosby grabbed the rebound for Jewell and missed a half court heave at the buzzer and the game went into overtime.

The Bearcats scored the first five points of overtime and never looked back as Jewell could only come as close as one.

Mosby had a game high 25 points including 11-15 from the foul line.  Darius Tomlin added 12 points and Hildebrandt had 10.  The Cards shot 40 percent from the field for the game and were 27-41 from the free throw line.

Cowlah was the leading scorer for Southwest Baptist with 14.

The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday, November 29 as they play an exhibition contest against University of Missouri-Kansas City at Municipal Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.
