The William Jewell College women's basketball team hosted Southwest Baptist University in non-conference action on Tuesday night in Liberty, Mo. The Bearcats used a strong second half surge to win the game 86-82 and drop the Cards to 2-2 on the season and Southwest Baptist improved to 2-2.
Jewell started out the game on an 8-0 run and held the Bearcats scoreless for the first 4:30 of the game. The Bearcats regrouped and by the end of the first half pulled within 3 before Kris Keys hit Jewell's first three pointer of the game with 2:08 to play in the first half. Jewell shot 59% percent from the field in the first half but was only one for seven from three point land and led 40-35 at halftime.
Jewell came out from the locker room and hit two of their first three point shots to build a 9 point lead at the first media timeout of the half.
Southwest used some pressure defense and hot shooting to cut the lead to two at the second media timeout and Lissette Plasencia hit two free throws to tie the game 62-62 with 9:41 to play.
Jewell went on a 5-0 run only to see the Bearcats go on a 6-0 run of their own to take their first lead of the game 68-67 with 7:30 to play.
The Bearcats built their largest lead of three at the last media timeout and came out of the break and hit two free throws to lead 77-72 with 4:40 to play.
Jewell answered back with another 5-0 run to tie the game 77-77 with 3:26 to play. The Bearcats then built a five point lead in the next two minutes of play before
Hayli Jo Smith drained a three with a defender in her face to cut the lead to two with 1:06 to play.
After Southwest hit one of two free throws, Jewell's
Maddie Nelson stepped up and hit two free throws to cut the lead to one with 30 seconds to play. Dilonna Johnson was able to hit one of two free throws with 19 seconds to play giving the Cards a chance to tie or win the game.
Morgan Lucy blocked the shot of Jewell's
Maddie Nelson and the Bearcats put the game away hitting two free throws.
Aerial Smith led Jewell with 24 points while
Maddie Nelson had 17 and
Logan Antenen contributed 14.
The Cardinals will next host Graceland University on Monday, December 1 at 5:30 p.m.
