The William Jewell Cardinals men's basketball team travelled to Wichita, Kan., to continue non-conference play against NCAA DII Newman University Jets. The Cardinals fought back to send the game into two overtime periods, but poor shooting and playmaking resulted in a loss, 97-90. The Cardinals fall to 3-4 on the season.
At halftime, the Cardinals were down by three points, and were not able to get the lead until
Cyril Bilong hit a three-pointer to put the Cardinals up 51-49, with 8:36 remaining in regulation. The Jets responded quickly and went on an 8-0 run.
The Cardinals fought back, and a three-pointer by Christian Hildebrant put the Cards up by one with 56 seconds remaining in regulation. The Jets came back down the court and got an and-one layup and free-throw from Jeremy Espinoza the put their lead up to two points.
With 18 seconds left,
Muusa Dama hit a lay-up for the Cardinals to tie the game, and was fouled on the play. Dama missed the free- throw and the Cardinals were able to grab the rebound, but could not capitalize, sending the game into overtime.
In the first overtime, Jewell started off on a 5-0 run, but the Jets were able to battle back to put themselves up by one after a made jumper by Cortrael Colbert with 1:41 remaining in OT. The Cardinals responded with a Mussa Dama dunk. Quickly after, the Jets hit a three-pointer to go up by two. With four seconds left,
Cyril Bilong put up a three that missed but was tipped in by
Christian Hildebrandt to send the game to a second overtime.
The Jets opened up the second overtime on a 9-0 run, and the Cardinals could not recover. The final score after two overtimes was 97-90.
Hildebrandt lead the Cards with 22 points.
Darius Tomlin followed closely with 20 points.
Cyril Bilong had 17 points off of the bench.
Hildebrandt also lead the team in rebounds with 11 and earned his first double-double of the year.
The Jets leading scorer and rebounder was Reggie Baker with 30 and 10, respectively.
Overall, the Cardinals shot 40 percent fromt the field (27.6% from three-point land) and 61.1 percent from the free-throw line. The Jets shot 43.5 percent (19.0% from three) and 86.8 percent from the free-throw line.
The Cardinals continue non-conference play against Missouri Valley College on Monday, December 15 in the Mabee Center, with tip-off at 7:00 PM.
