Cards Take Down NCAA Division I UMKC

Box Score
The William Jewell College women's basketball team traveled to Municipal Auditorium on Saturday to take on NCAA Division I University of Missouri-Kansas City.  The Cardinals came away with the 59-51 win to improve to 6-3 overall on the season.

The first half went back and forth and Jewell led by the slimmest of margins at halftime 29-28.

Jewell held UMKC scoreless for the first five minutes but were just as cold themselves and could not build a lead for the first 15 minutes of the second half.

Jewell then built a seven point lead with 3:50 to play on a jumper by Hayli Jo Smith.  Thanks to move turnovers Jewell built a ten point lead with 2:01 to play on four straight points from Mackenzie Johnson.

Hayli Jo Smith hit a 35 foot three pointer to put the game away with the shot clock running down at the 1:20 mark.

Both teams struggled from the field on the afternoon as the Cards shot only 30 percent from the field while the Roos shot 40 percent.   Jewell equally struggled from three-point land going 4-25 on the game.  Hayli Jo Smith led the Cards with 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Aerial Smith knocked in 14 points and dished out six assists while Johnson added 10 points and 9 rebounds.

The Cardinals forced 23 turnovers in the contest and committed 14.

This is Jewell's last non-conference game of the year. GLVC play resumes on January 2, when the team travels to Evansville, Ind., to play the University of Southern Indiana. Jewell is currently 1-0 in GLVC play.
