Box Score
Jewell men's basketball closed the regular season with a loss at Rockhurst University on Thursday night, dropping the game at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse in Kansas City 79-77, splitting the season series with the Hawks.
The series was not without drama this year, with Jewell's win coming in December on a 70 foot shot by
Dwight Sistrunk, Jr., and Thursday night's game ending with a just-that-close three point try by Alexander Hutson that hit the front of the rim and bounced off as time expired.
Jewell fell behind quickly 7-0, only to build a 12 point first-half lead behind the play of Hutson, who scored nine first-half points. Leading by six entering the second half, the Cardinals let Rockhurst back into the game by shooting only 37% in the half and 38% for the game. Â Rockhurst shot 55% from the floor in the second half.
Still, a missed free-throw with just seconds remaining gave Jewell a chance. Â As Sistrunk dribbled down the floor, Hutson spotted up on the right wing and took the shot, changing the arch a bit over an oncoming defender. Â The shot was just short, Rockhurst secured the rebond, and the Hawks (7-18, 3-15 GLVC) claimed the win.
Hutson and Sistrunk each had 16 points, while D'Vante Mosby had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Â
Clint McCullough had 11 points, and Sistrunk had eight rebounds.
Jewell (11-15, 7-11) will travel to Louisville, Ky., as they take on Bellarmine University at 3:00 p.m. (est) in the 2014 Deaconess GLVC Men's Basketball Tournament.
