The William Jewell College women's basketball team continued Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Saturday afternoon hosting Saint Joseph's College. Jewell used a strong second half performance to defeat the Pumas 70-60. Jewell improves to 8-5 and 3-2 in the GLVC. Saint Joseph's falls to 4-10 overall and 1-4 in the GLVC.
The Pumas shot out of the gate and held Jewell to one field goal in the first seven minutes of the game and led 11-3. Jewell took their first lead of the game at the 3:54 mark of the first half on a three pointer by
Maddie Nelson. The lead was short lived as a minute later Saint Joseph's built a five point lead and led 35-32 at halftime. Jewell shot 29 percent from the field in the first half but did hit 4 three point shots.
The Cards struggled for the first three minutes of the second half before
Logan Antenen provided a much needed boost and scored six straight points for Jewell to help pull them within one. Mackenzie Johnson put the Cards up for good 42-40 at the 14 minute mark and Jewell built their biggest lead of the game 66-57 at the 3:48 mark of the game and never looked back. Jewell shot a blazing 65 percent from the field in the second half and forced 20 turnovers in the game.
Antenen and Nelson led Jewell in scoring with 15 a piece.
Aerial Smith added 11 while
Hayli Jo Smith contributed 10.
The Cardinals will host Missouri S&T on Thursday, January 15 with tip-off slated for 5:30 p.m.
