Cardinal Football Rallies in Second Half, Wins on Final Play at Quincy

Two timeouts by Quincy University with just four seconds left in the game did not phase Jewell kicker Brandon Womack, as the Cardinals upended Quincy Saturday on Womack's no-time-remaining field goal from 28 yards on Saturday afternoon, lifting Jewell to a 24-21 win in Great Lakes Valley Conference football.

The Cardinals rallied from 14 point deficits twice in the game, 14-0 in the first quarter and 21-7 with 10 minutes remaining in the half.

Quincy did not score the rest of the game, as Jewell shut them out for the final 39:56 of the game.

The Cardinal rally began in the second half.  Down 21-7, Nate Egharevba took a 47 yard pass from Nick West down the left sideline to cut the lead to seven, then, after an Justice Taylor interception, the Cardinals scored again on a Thomas Cook one yard dive early in the fourth quarter.

Although Jewell had the better of field position in the fourth quarter, it wasn't until the final drive began at the Cardinal 49 yard line with 2:23 remaining that Jewell could focus on winning the game.  Using the clock deliberately, the Cardinals drove down to the Quincy 11 yard line to set up the final kick.

Womack waited through the back-to-back time outs from the Hawks before hitting the winning field goal from just inside the left hashmark.

The Cardinals have won back-to-back games and climb to 2-4 overall, and 2-2 in the conference.  Quincy is 2-3, and 2-2 in the GLVC.

Jewell travels to Southwest Baptist University next Saturday.
