The William Jewell Cardinals women's soccer team won their last home game of the season 1-0 over the University of Indianapolis Hounds this Sunday, closing out their home portion of the season. With the win the Cardinals improve to a 6-6-3 overall and a 4-6-2 in the GLVC. Meanwhile the Hounds move to 2-8-4 overall and 1-7-4 in the GLVC.
Under tough windy conditions both teams started aggressively, with an even possession hold throughout the first half. Some early shots on goal by both
Emma Baldridge and
Aspen Hawkins gave signs for a hopeful start however it was not enough to give the Cardinals the lead. Both ends of the field were kept busy as the Cardinals and Hounds continued to battle it out for the half.
At the 31:03 minute mark a brilliant pass into the forward half by Haley White broke up the Hounds defense and made for an easy goal by
Jade Gifford. Gifford now tallies up her fifth goal for the season. The rest of the first half proved to be all Cardinals as they continued to dominate possession.
The second half started much like the first, with a tight battle between the two teams. In an attempt to get a score on the board the Hounds got an early break in their forward half that saw
Natalie Owens desperately dive and shut out the Hounds striker. Cardinal's keeper Jordan Evans was also kept busy during the game recording two saves. The Cardinals looked to press on and extend their lead in the second half, recording two shots and the defense was able to hold on for the win.
The Cardinals travel to University of Wisconsin Parkside next Friday October 23 to play the Rangers with kickoff set for 1:15 pm.
