The William Jewell volleyball team dropped a match to University of Missouri-Science and Technology in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Friday night at the Mabee Center. The loss drops the Cardinals to 4-13 overall, 0-8 in the GLVC.
The Miners entered the contest on a seven game winning streak and continued that against Jewell. In the first set the Cardinals fell behind 23-14 but managed to battle back behind a balanced attack to 23-19 before two kills from Claire Luther and Claire Friedlund sealed the first set 25-20. In the opening set Jewell had five different players with two kills each while comitting just five errors.
Set two opened up with the Miners grabbing a 9-3 lead forcing head coach
Carolyn Raynes to call a timeout to refocus her young squad. The lead would grow as large as 21-15 before Jewell went on a run. The Cardinals got as close as 23-20 behind two kills and an ace from
Raechel Meisinger. As a team the Cardinals combined to post one of their highest set attack percentages at .317 as they totaled 14 kills while committing just one error. They also played well defensively down the stretch grabbing 19 digs.
In the final set Missouri S&T claimed control early and never looked back. Jewell fell behind 0-4 and battled back to even the score behind kills from
Emily Burton and
Kaylee Marquardt combined with two Miner errors. However, the tie was shortlived as Missouri S&T pushed the lead as far as 17-9 forcing another timeout from
Carolyn Raynes. The two teams would trade points through the final part of the match but the early lead was too much to overcome for the young Jewell squad.
Freshman
Paige Cunningham led the Cardinals would eight kills on 25 attempts, followed by Burton with six and Meisinger with five.
Stefanie Richterkessing posted 25 assists while
Olivia Tolberd grabbed a game-high 22 digs.
Up next for Jewell is a match up with Drury University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The game will serve as part two of Dig Pink Weekend.
