The William Jewell women's basketball team fell to 1-2 on the season after dropping a 68-63 contest to California State Dominguez Hills (1-2) on Sunday to wrap up the CCA Division II Tip Off Classic (Anaheim, Calif.) Although officially sited as a neutral game, the contest was played on the Toros home court.
Neither team got off to a good start as the two combined to go just 6-24 from the floor, including 2-12 from behind the three point line, both of those by the Cardinals. However, Dominguez Hills led 12-9 to end the first quarter after going 4-6 from the free throw line while Jewell hit just three of eight.
For the third game in a row the Cardinals went on a run in the second quarter outscoring the Toros 23-16 behind a 15-4 run that included five three-point shots by four different players. With a 32-22 lead Jewell struggled over the final two minutes of the half as they had three turnovers and committed three fouls, allowing Dominguez Hills to climb back into the game as the score stood at 32-28 at the half.
After a hot-shooting second quarter, the Cardinals went cold in the third as they hit just one three point shot and allowed a 15-5 run by Dominguez Hills. The Toros opened the second half with three consecutive three pointers combined with an odd turnover by the Cardinals. At the 5:20 mark, Jewell head coach
Jill Slominski called a timeout and Cardinals failed to get out of the huddle in time which forced the official to begin the inbounds count before the Cardinal players were able to go get to the ball, ultimately resulting in a five-second violation. Immediately following the turnover junior point guard
Maddie Nelson picked up her fourth personal foul and was forced to sit for the remainder of the quarter.
With Nelson out Jewell couldn't get the offense going, entering the middle part of the fourth quarter without a point since the final minute of the third period, before a free throw from
Adriana Rodriguez broke the drought. The Toros went on another run, pushing the lead to as many as 18 before Jewell began to make things interesting down the stretch. The Cardinals went on a 13-2 run aided by three consecutive Dominguez Hills turnovers and big three-point shots from
Katie Finn and
Meagan Paul to pull within seven points with under two mintues remaining.
Forced to begin fouling Jewell made one final push, but the Toros made just enough of their free throws to keep the Cardinals at bay winning 68-63.
Freshman
Blair Klostermann recorded her first career double-double in the loss with a team-high 19 points and ten rebounds while
Logan Antenen added 15 points. Even while playing with foul trouble, Nelson managed to grab 11 points on three of five shooting from behind the arc to go along with four assists. Rodriguez chipped in six rebounds. The Toros were paced by Breanne Garcia who scored 16 of her game-high 20 points in the second half.
Following the long weekend of basketball, the Cardinals will have two weeks off before traveling to Wayne, Neb. to take part in the Wayne State College Tournament on November 13-14.
