The William Jewell men's basketball team drained 13 three pointers to overtake Baker University, 88-75, on Friday night at the Mabee Center in the 2015 season opener.
The Cardinals were 13-for-39 from 3-point range in the game.
Jewell nailed down six three pointers in the first half and led 41-32 at the half.
The Wildcats came out of halftime on fire going on a 9-2 run to cut Jewell's lead to two.
Jewell overcame the Baker run thanks in part to more 3-pointers which helped them to retake the advantage and stay ahead.
The Cardinals took their largest lead of the game, 76-54, off five straight points from
Darius Tomlin at 8:12 in the second half.
Jewell was able to take control from there and hang on for the win.
The Cardinals shot 45 percent from the field, while holding the Wildcats to 46 percent field-goal shooting. Jewell scored 21 points from the free-throw line off 67 percent shooting.
Tomlin scored a game high 22 points while
Matt Lassen contributed 21 including 5-10 from 3-point land. Three other Cardinals finished the night in double figures with
Patrick Whelan (14),
Javier De La Blanca (12), and
Austin Regier (10). De La Blanca also pulled down 9 rebounds and Regier contributed 8.
Clae Martin led Baker with 12 points and Gregg Easter had 11.
The Cardinals (1-0) will travel to Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo., to take on UMKC on Sunday at 6:00 p.m.
