The William Jewell volleyball team got back into the win column Friday night as they defeated Saint Joseph's College 3-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Cardinals, who honored their two seniors
Kaylee Marquardt and
Kelsey Wagner prior to the game, now stand at 8-19 overall, 2-12 in the GLVC.
The Pumas took set one 25-22 after the Cardinals hit just .096 with eight errors.
Set two started with the two teams trading points before Jewell went on a five point run led by two kills from
Raechel Meisinger. Saint Joseph's pulled within two at 15-13 before the Cardinals went on another run of six points, primarily off Puma errors. Although the visitors pulled back within five, three more errors and a
Stefanie Richterkessing ace sealed the set victory at 25-17.
Set three saw the Cardinals jump out to 16-10 lead behind three kills from
Grace Miller. The Pumas did not go quietly however, as they pulled within three at 21-18 before it was Miller again who closed things out with two more kills, giving her five in the set. In the third frame Jewell hit a game-high .265 with 17 kills and just four errors.
In the final set Jewell battled back from a 10-6 deficit before scoring on ten consecutive service points from
Alix Weigel, including three aces. Again the Pumas battled back within two points at 20-18 before an error, and four Cardinal kills, including the final point from libero
Olivia Tolberd, finished the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
Marquardt led the all players with a .400 attack percentage as she posted a team-high 14 kills while committing just two errors. Meisinger and Miller followed closely with 12 and ten kills respectively while Wagner chipped in eight kills, six digs, and two aces.
Defensively Jewell enjoyed four players with double-digit digs, led by Tolberd's 21.
Paige Cunningham followed with 16, Richterkessing with 13, and Weigel with ten. Richterkessing also posted 40 assists and four aces.
The Cardinals out blocked Saint Joseph's 16-10 led by Cunningham's seven.
