Cardinals Fall in Five Set Thriller to UINDY

The William Jewell volleyball team dropped the 2015 home finale to Indianapolis in five sets Saturday 21-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-19, 13-15. The loss takes the Cardinals to 8-20 overall, 2-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The two teams started out evenly as neither could grab more than a three point lead before the end of the set where UINDY grabbed three kills to win 25-21.

Set two started with Jewell jumping out to a 14-9 lead, forcing Hounds' head coach Jason Reed to call timeout. UINDY battled back to within one at 21-20 before a combination of Paige Cunningham, Kaylee Marquardt, and Grace Miller sealed the set 25-21. In the second set the Cardinals hit .214 as a team and dug up 21 balls, compared to the .125 attack percentage, and 14 digs in the first set.

The third set was another back-and-forth affair before the Hounds went on a 9-1 run to go up 20-10. The Cardinals put together a small six point run led by two kills from Kelsey Wagner and Cunningham but UINDY's Kacee Salyers recorded two kills of her own to earn the 25-18 set victory. Jewell was outstanding defensively in the third set as they grabbed another 22 digs and three blocks but posted only nine kills and a .000 attack percentage which led to the loss.

In set four the Cardinals made things interesting with a spark off the bench from freshman Jenna Rau. With the score 16-12 in favor of Jewell, Cunningham, Marquardt and Rau all recorded kills to lead the Cardinals to a 25-19 victory to tie the game.

The final set went down to the wire, with neither team advancing farther than a three point lead. The Hounds opened with a 3-1 lead on a kill, block, and ace and seemed to have all the momentum going their way. Rau and Miller then posted back-to-back kills to tie the game at four. Two Cardinal errors gave UINDY a two point lead a 6-4 before the Hounds handed two errors right back tying the set once again.

The two teams traded the next three points to land in a tie at ten which is when the Hounds seem to run away with the match as they recorded back-to-back kills along with a Jewell error to go up 13-10. However, an error and two kills from Rau tied the game again at 13. Unfortunately for the Cardinals two errors proved costly as they dropped the final set 15-13 and the match 3-2. The final frame had nine ties over the course of 28 total points scored.

Marquardt, a senior playing in her final game at the Mabee Center led the Cardinals with 17 kills, followed by Cunningham with 10 and Wanger with nine. Rau, who played in just two sets, came off the bench to grab seven kills and a solo block. Of the 13 points scored by Jewell in the final set, five came from Rau.

Defensively Jewell recorded their third consecutive game with four players having double-digit digs, led by Cunningham's career-high of 21. Stefanie Richterkessing followed with 17 and Codi Winslow with 13. Libero Olivia Tolberd also posted 21 digs. Richterkessing was just one shy of her career-high as she finished with 44 assists.

The Cardinals will finish out the 2015 season with three road games next week. On Wednesday they travel across town to Rockhurst at 7:00 p.m., followed by a trip to Truman State on Friday and Quincy on Saturday.
