The William Jewell Cardinals women's basketball team fell to the Newman University Jets in a hard-fought 58-55 loss on Saturday afternoon in the Mabee Center.
 
The Cardinals raced out of the gate to a 20-12 lead after the first quarter. However, the Jets outscored the Cardinals 18-4 in the second quarter to take a 30-24 lead into the halftime break.

William Jewell would storm back in the third quarter, carrying a 42-37 lead into the final quarter of play. Unfortunately, the Cardinals would fall victim to another torrid streak by the Jets, as Newman opened the quarter on a 10-0 run. The Cardinals had a shot to send the game into overtime, but their three-point attempt fell short as time expired.
 
The Cardinals were plagued by abysmal shooting all afternoon, making only 30% of their attempted field goals. Additionally, the traditionally sharp-shooting Cardinals shot just 3-17 from behind the three-point line.
 
Chris Keys led the Cardinals in scoring, going 13-14 from the free throw line for all 13 of her points. Madison Campbell and Blair Klostermann also helped the Cardinal effort, scoring 10 and 9 points, respectively.
 
Point guard Shaunice Robinson led the Jets in scoring with 14 points. Brianna Caldwell aided the  Jets' victorious campaign with 12 points.
 
The loss drops the Cardinals to 4-8 on the year. With the win, Newman University improves their record to 6-2.
 
The Cardinals return to action at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 15, as they take on Ottawa University in a non-conference matchup at the Mabee Center.
