The William Jewell men's basketball team dominated throughout the game in route to a 88-69 win over the Avila University Eagles on Saturday afternoon in the Mabee Center.

The Cardinals started the game on a 10-2 run, and would ride that momentum to a 39-25 lead at the half. Jewell refused to slow down the pace in the second half, ignited by three three-pointers on three straight possessions from junior
Matt Lassen in the opening minutes of the second half. The large lead allowed all of the Cardinals to see playing time in the second half.

The Cardinals were spurred offensively by 13 three-point field goals. They also had a solid day defensively, forcing the Eagles to shoot just 26 percent from the field in the first half and 37 percent from the field for the game.

Lassen led the Cardinals offensively with 24 points, 18 of them coming from behind the three-point line.
Patrick Whelan and
Austin Regier also aided the Cardinal effort, chipping in 14 and 12 points, respectively. Regier chipped in seven rebounds and four assists as well.

The Eagles received a big day from Sedric Johnson, who led all scorers with 28 points on the afternoon. Trey Bales contributed 21 points for the Eagles.

With their second straight win, the Cardinals improve to 4-5 overall. The loss drops the Eagles to 8-5 on the year.

The Cardinals return to action on January 2, as they take on Graceland University at 3:00 p.m. in the Mabee Center.
