Von Washington and Evan McGaughey scored 18 and 16 points respectively to carry Quincy University to an 89-60 Great Lakes Valley Conference opening victory over the William Jewell Cardinals tonight at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Ill.
The loss drops Jewell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in league play, while the Hawks improve to 4-3 and 1-0.
Washinton and McGaughey were two of three Hawks in double figures, leading an offensive attack that shot 51.7 percent including 48 percent from 3-point land
Quincy ran out to an early 7-2 lead and the closest the Cards ever got was three when Quincy led 9-6. Jewell struggled all night from the field only shooting 34.4 percent on the night.
The Hawks also hit 15 3 pointers to only six for Jewell which is a reversal of roles over previous games for William Jewell.
The Cardinals were also plagued by 17 turnovers, and were out rebounded 41-35.
Jewell sophomore center
Emil Ostafiiciuc was the only Cardinal in double figures scoring 10.
Easton Koch and
Clark Minnifield chipped in with 8 points each.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday in their GLVC home opener against Truman State. Tip-off at the Mabee Center is set for 4:00 p.m.
