The William Jewell College women's basketball team got by the University of Illinois-Springfield on Thursday evening 92-91 in double overtime. The win snapped a three-game losing skid and improves the Cards to 12-10 overall and 7-7 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
The Cards appreared to be headed for a loss when Shelbi Patterson gave the Prairie Stars a 91-90 lead with 5.7 seconds to go in the second overtime. On the ensuing Cardinal possesion Chris Keys was fouled with 2.1 seconds to play and Keys calmly sank both free throws to give Jewell the lead and the winning margin. Keys had a monster game for Jewell scoring a game high 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. She was also 13-14 from the free throw line and the team as a whole was 24-26 from the charity stripe.
Hayli Jo Smith chipped in 20 points and
Katie Finn added 15.
The Cards will travel to Lebanon, Ill., to take on McKendree University on Saturday, February 14. Tip off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
