Box Score 3 Nebraska-Kearney Box ScoreNebraska Wesleyan Box ScoreBaker Box ScoreThe William Jewell College women's tennis opened their 2015 spring season in Nebraska falling on Friday to Nebraska-Kearney before sweeping Nebraska Wesleyan and Baker on Saturday.
Friday afternoon, the women traveled to Grand Island, Neb., and faced Nebraska-Kearney, a Division II team, and lost 7-2.
After the doubles, the Cardinals were down 1-2. Their lone win came from
Savannah Drew and
Lauren Huddlestun at No. 3 doubles with a thrilling 9-8 come from behind win.
The Lopers then won five of the six singles matches to earn their seventh victory of the season. The only singles win came from
Loree Hazelrigg at No. 4 singles as she won 3-6, 7-6 and 10-6.
On Saturday, Jewell traveled to Lincoln, Neb., and rallied to defeat Nebraska Wesleyan 6-3.
In the doubles competition, Drew and Huddlestun again earned Jewell's only doubles point with a dominating 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Cards then won five of the six singles matches with wins coming from Drew,
Conner Hazelrigg,
Loree Hazelrigg,
Katy Lehenbauer and
Claire Mackay. Mackay's win at No. 6 singles was her first collegiate win after joining the Cardinals in January.
In the final match of the weekend, Jewell dominated former Heart of America Athletic Conference foe Baker University, 8-1.
Jewell Swept through the doubles competition with the only close match coming at No. 1 doubles with
Sabrine Navarro and Lehenbauer prevailing 8-6.
Jewell again won five of the six singles matches and in the five wins the Cards did not drop a set. First-year player
Seki Anderson also earned her first collegiate win in the victory over the Wildcats.
The Cardinals (2-1) will next host University of Illinois-Springfield on Sunday, March 1 at Clayview Country Club. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m.
