The William Jewell College women's basketball team closed out the 2014-15 season hosting Rockhurst University on Thursday. The Cards came out victorious 85-78 in overtime to improve to 15-11 and 10-8 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
The Cardinals took control in the first half thanks to a 24-10 run to close out the first half which saw the Cards shoot a blistering 50% from the field and the Cards led 37-25 at halftime.
Rockhurst came out on fire in the second half and went on a 12-7 run to cut the lead to seven with 14:54 to play.
The Hawks took their first lead of the second half 50-49 with 8:08 to play only to see Jewell pull back ahead with Chris Keys' layup. Rockhurst then hit two straight three pointers to take a 56-51 lead with 6:08 to play.
The lead went back and forth and Jewell led 62-64 with 27 seconds to play. Rockhurst tied it up 62-62 with 10 seconds to play.
Hayli Jo Smith missed a three with 4 seconds to play and Rockhurst got the ball back with 3.7 seconds to play in regulation but could not get a shot off and the game went into overtime.
After Rockhurst took a one point lead Jewell went on a 8-0 run to take a 74-67 lead which helped close out the game.
Senior
Aerial Smith closed out her regular season career leading Jewell with 25 points.
Maddie Nelson poured in 17 points while
Hayli Jo Smith added 13.
The Cardinals will host Maryville University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Confernce Tournament.
