The William Jewell College softball team took to the diamond for their 2015 home opener on Sunday at Spratt Sports Complex in Liberty, Mo. The Cards hosted Upper Iowa University and swept the visiting Peacocks winning game one 7-3 and taking game two 5-3. Jewell improves to 5-1 overall while Upper Iowa falls to 3-8 on the year.
In game one, the Peacocks took an early 1-0 lead before Jewell tied it up 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Jewell then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth keyed by a three-run homerun from
Shelby McGraw.
Brooke Barnard helped the offense by going 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Nona Pauline improved to 2-1 on the year tossing seven innings giving up six hits, three runs (two earned) while striking out seven.
Game two was a pitching duel until the bottom of the fifth when the Cards plated home five runs.
The Peacocks made things interesting scoring three runs in the top of the seventh but Jewell was able to hang on for the sweep.
Madi Giles led the offense in game two with two hits and two RBI's.
Shelby McGraw pitched six innings giving up four hits and three runs to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Cardinals will host Lincoln University on Wednesday for a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is slated for 1:00 p.m.
