The William Jewell College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Emporia State University on Thursday afternoon.
The Cardinals (23-20) took the opener 6-2, but fell to the Hornets (31-3) in the nightcap 11-5.
In Game one,
Nona Pauline and
Shelby McGraw combined to give up only five hits and two runs. McGraw earned the win her ninth of the season.Â
Jewell jumped on the board in the third inning on a RBI double from senior
Faith Song and added another run in the fourth on a RBI single by
Madi Giles.Â
The Cards put the game away with two in the fifth and a solo homerun from Song in the sixth.Â
Song led Jewell, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBI's, while
Rachel Potvin went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
In Game two, the Hornets took control of the game from the get go, scoring two in the first, four in the fourth and five in the sixth.Â
Jewell did tack on five runs highlighted by homeruns from
Kelsey Morgan and Giles. Giles finished the game 2-4 with two runs scored and three RBI's. Song went 4-4 to finish 7-8 in the doubleheader.Â
Jewell will resume Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend with home games versus Lewis University and Wisconsin Parkside.
