The William Jewell College softball team returned to Great Lakes Valley Conference action today as they hosted University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The Cardinals came away with a sweep of the Rangers winning 12-5 in game one and 8-2 in game two.
The Rangers jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Jewell heading into the bottom of the third.
Kelsey Morgan hit a two run double in the bottom of the third to get Jewell on the scoreboard and after another run came across the Cards had cut the lead to 4-3. Jewell tied the game with a single run in the fourth then exploded for two runs in the fifth and six runs in the sixth to put the game away.
Nona Pauline had a two run homerun in the fifth, and
Brooke Bernard hit a three run shot in the sixth.
Pauline finished the game 3-4 with four RBI's while Morgan was also 3-4 with two RBI's.
Madi Giles was 4-5 with two runs scored and an RBI and
Rachel Potvin collected three hits in five at bats with a run scored and an RBI.
Shelby McGraw (10-8) pitched six innings of relief of
Faith Song to earn the win. McGraw gave up 11 hits, and five runs but did strike out eight.
It was Jewell who broke out with the early lead in game two, but unlike the Rangers, the Cards were able to use the early lead to their advantage. Jewell scored five in the third highlighted by a grand slam from McGraw.
Pauline would earn the win on the hill her ninth of the season. She tossed a complete game giving up six hits and two runs while striking out ten.
The Cardinals (25-20, 12-14 GLVC) will wrap up the home portion of their 2015 season with a doubleheader against Lewis on Monday starting at 12:00 p.m.
