The William Jewell Cardinals wrapped up their home portion of the 2015 season today with a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against Lewis University. Jewell took game one in dramatic fashion on a walk off three run homerun and took game two scoring two in the bottom of the sixth to win 8-7.
Jewell improves to 27-20 overall and 13-13 in the GLVC while Lewis falls to 21-20 overall and 11-13 in the GLVC.
Game one was a pitchers dual throughout. Lewis took a 1-0 lead with a single run in the sixth. Jewell responded with three in the sixth highlighted by a two run single from
Kelsey Teneycke.
Lewis answered back with two runs to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh.
The Flyers then scored a single run in the top of the ninth to lead 4-3. In the bottom of the ninth,
Faith Song and
Brooke Bernard reached on singles.
Courtney Johnson came in to run for Bernard and stole second after Song advanced to third.
Nona Pauline came up with one out and drilled a pitch over the center field wall to end the game with a walk off three run homerun.
Shelby McGraw (11-8) earned the win tossing all nine innings giving up 8 hits, four runs (two earned) while striking out two.
Game two, started with a solo homerun from Lewis followed by a solo homerun in the bottom of the first from Song. It was Song's 36th homerun in her career which put her in first place all-time for Jewell softball.
The Cards then exploded for four runs in the fourth highlighted by a two run doubles from
Madi Giles and Song both hits were with two outs.
Lewis mounted a comeback of their own scoring three in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 6-5 then scored two in the top of the sixth to take a 7-6 lead.
Jewell mounted another comeback in the sixth thanks to an error on the Lewis pitcher which scored
Megan Barnes who was running for Song.
McGraw earned the win on the mound in relief of Pauline her 12th of the year.
Giles went 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's while Song was 3-3 with three RBI's.
The Cardinals will travel to Springfield, Ill., on Saturday to take on University of Illinois-Springfield followed by a doubleheader on Sunday with McKendree.
