The William Jewell College baseball team swept a doubleheader from Quincy University on Friday which put the Cards in a first place tie with Quincy in the Western Division of the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings. Jewell won game one 12-8 and took game two 7-2.
In game one, the Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before the Cardinal offense exploded. Jewell scored one in the second, two in the fourth, five in the fifth and 4 in the seventh to take a 12-2 lead. Quincy scored 6 in the bottom half of the seventh but Jewell's lead was too much to overcome.
Bryan Porting was 2-4 with five RBI's for the Cards and
Jared Patton was 2-4 with two RBI's.
Austin Kretchmar improved to 7-0 on the season going seven innings for Jewell.
The Cardinals jumped out to the early lead in game two scoring single runs in the first and third innings respectively. Jewell then scored two in the fourth and put the game away with three more in the seventh.
Billy Kirkpatrick (3-0) tossed a complete game giving up 8 hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out four.
The Cardinals (21-6 overall and 12-4 in the GLVC) will conclude the four game set with Quincy tomorrow with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
