The William Jewell College baseball team's road to their first ever NCAA Division II World Series just got tougher, as it fell to fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent Truman State University in the Midwest Regional opener. The Cardinals managed just six hits in a 6-0 shutout loss at Lindenwood University's Lou Brock Sports Complex on Thursday.
The first six innings was a pitcher's duel between Jewell's
Austin Kretchmar and Truman's Cody Garner. Truman entered the top of the seventh leading 1-0 before breaking the game open with five runs.
Kretchmar took the loss, falling to 8-3 on the season. Kretchmar pitched 9-0 innings giving up 9 hits and six runs (four earned).
Bryan Porting had three of the six hits for Jewell.
The Cardinals will now face Quincy University tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. Quincy defeated Ashland University earlier today 6-5 in 10 innings.
